Wow! Yes, I thought you would like that trio of books; glad you liked them. So I've been trying to figure out just how I latched onto them. I'm pretty sure it was one of those Amazon "if you liked one book, you might like these" referrals. Now I'm stuck trying to figure out referral from what.

I agree, the chain book stores seem to be full of flavor of the month SF-just finished reading Name of the Wind and Ender's Shadow so I'm ready for the offbeat. I also plan on checking out the SF links. Thank you, cannot wait to head to the library and/or book store this weekend!

For years and years I've belonged to Science Fiction Book Club - no fees, no limits and can be checked out online. Pretty good selections. As long as once a month you remember to check off don't send you're safe. To check them out -- www.sfbc.com.

I still miss Astounding Science Fiction Magazine. We cut our teeth on that back in 1950.

Thank you for the wonderful, astute review of the Takeshi Kovacs series. It may be that granny subscribes to Locus magazine, an independent publication that provides news about the science fiction, fantasy, and horror publishing field -- stories about publishers, awards, and conferences including a section called "People & Publishing" (rights sold, books sold, books resold, books delivered, publishing news, promotions; people news and photos about vacations, weddings, and births). They are also online at locusmag.com. Currently, interesting stuff is being produced by smaller presses such as PS Publishing, Tachyon, Subterranean, Solaris and Night Shade Books. Link to small presses:
